MAN Diesel & Turbo is providing a RG90-8 integrally-geared centrifugal compressor for Shell Canada’s Quest carbon capture and storage project in Alberta Province, Canada.

Quest will capture more than 1.1 million tons per year (1 Mtpy) of CO₂ from its Scotford oil sands upgrader and store it at an underground injection site. Operations will begin in 2015.

MAN said the compressor will have four pinions engaged with different gear ratios, thus allowing diverse rotating speeds. Each pinion mounts two impellers in a back-to-back arrangement.

The equipment will compress the CO₂ in eight stages to a discharge pressure of 1900 psi (130 bar), which is sufficient to move it 37 miles (60 km) via pipeline for underground injection.
